BEFORE WRITING A PLAY
1. An in depth research of the problem –political, social, economic.
2. A research of the plot and situation
3. Understand the reaction of the public.
4. Aim for an unbiased and bold perspective.
5. Study the audience – what section of society does your audience belong to?
6. From the point that the root causes of a problem have been established these have to be cornerstone and foundation of the play and support it till entire script is written.
Once the above information and related experience have been gathered, they can take the form of a play keeping in mind the following-
1. Subject – The subject of the play has to be carefully selected
2. Theme – Political ,Social, Economic and cultural
3. Plot – Prepare the story line for the play
4. Story – With sensitivity proceed to flesh out the story
5. Character/Characterization – Proceed with the characterization on the basis of the situations within the plot.
6. Dialogue – Energetic, lively, short, flowing logically , effective
7. Language – Simple but satirical, aiming the hearts and minds of the play’s audience like a sharp arrow.
8. Scenes- The working out of scenes have to measure their relevance with the help of such questions: how many characters appear in each scene and why? Are the scenes helping build the play?
9. Ending – The play has to end on an encouraging note trying to inspire the audience.
10. Audience- One must consider if the play is meant for the target audience and relevant to them.
11. Aim – Is the written play achieving the goal set for it? Rethink over this, study the points over and analyse them.
The above listed method of writing a play has not been read from books. It is based on experience. It is the result of systematic learning so that new writers find a direction for their feelings and thoughts and they do not have to face in decisions. Writers have to be encouraged. To go through the above given process before writing a play is a precious experience that produces a newer insight and understanding in a writer. This process is similar to being tested and polished by fire.
The writer also experiences the pain associated with the problem being dealt with- they are lived by the writer and expressed in words on paper.
The entire subject is absorbed and expressed in an unbiased and bold perspective. The job of writer is full of challenge. It needs sincerity, determination and an objective personality. It needs a simple but a strong communicative power that can reach out to the people with the message of the writer. Sensitivity is an important quality; it is the basis for the writer ‘s presence of mind.
